In Case of an Accident

If you have been injured as a result of an accident you should contact an attorney as soon as possible to ensure all the proper steps are taken to receive the best outcome.

1. You should not discuss your case with anyone other than your own medical providers prior to speaking to an attorney. Likewise, do not sign anything relating to your case unless it has first been reviewed by an attorney. Do not give any statements to anyone.
2. Obtain and keep copies of all medical, dental, hospital and prescription bills. Also keep records of all other expenses that you may have in connection with your accident (such as hiring of extra help, etc.). All bills that you pay yourself should be paid by check or reimbursed to you by check.
3. Keep records of all the dates you are absent from work as a result of your accident and the amount of money that you would have made if you had been working. If your injuries have prevented you from being advanced in your employment or have prevented you from obtaining employment, keep a list of names, addresses, and telephone numbers of witnesses who can provide this for you.
4. You should return to each of your doctors as often as necessary. When speaking with your doctors, be sure not to minimize your injuries and inform them of all your complaints. Your doctors will be preparing written reports for use in your claim and their reports can only be as complete as the information you have supplied.
5. We recommend that you keep a daily or weekly diary of your complaints and progress. This will help you in relating your difficulties and injuries to others in the future. Remember that it could be several years before your claim is resolved.
6. If you have injuries which are visible, have them photographed. Also, if your injuries require the use of a cervical collar, brace, cast or other apparatus, have yourself photographed wearing the apparatus. You should also save the apparatus even if you are no longer using it.
7. Photograph any area where the accident and personal injury took place including, but not limited to, automobiles, areas of slip and falls, products, etc. You should not sign any documents, receipts, releases or checks that contain any language which may affect your personal injury claim.
8. Keep a list of all witnesses which you are aware of.
9. If you were given a traffic summons as a result of an automobile accident, you should take an attorney with you to the municipal court hearing, since what happens in that court can affect your personal injury claim.
